Alex Sundakov

Alex Sundakov consults on regulation and competition policy issues in New Zealand and internationally. He frequently acts as an expert witness in competition policy cases both in New Zealand and Australia. He has provided economic advice on a number of major transactions requiring clearance from competition authorities under merger control provisions of competition law. In New Zealand, these included the dairy industry, port, supermarket, bank, media and other sector mergers. Alex has also provided economic evidence for international arbitration under the investment protection treaties.

Alex Sundakov started his career in New Zealand Treasury in 1984, working on health, labour market and regulation issues. In 1992, he joined the International Monetary Fund. A period at the headquarters in Washington DC was followed by a stint as the IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine. In 1997 Alex became Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, the country's premier economics think tank. Since 2003, Alex has been Executive Director of Castalia, an international economics and strategy consultancy.

Alex was educated at the Victoria University of Wellington and the London School of Economics.
