Q and A with the Hon Paul Heath QC
The Honourable Paul Heath QC, a former High Court Judge, will be joining us at this months network meeting. The meeting will be a question and answer format, which will be a great opportunity to get answers to significant questions from a presenter with a very significant background in and knowledge of arbitration and adjudication.
Paul was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of New Zealand in April 2002. Between 2003 and 2016 he was one of the High Court Judges assigned to sit as a member of divisional panels of the Court of Appeal. He also served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal of Vanuatu in 2011. He retired from judicial office in New Zealand with effect from 6 April 2018. On 9 April 2018, he joined Bankside Chambers in Auckland, and is an Associate with Chambers known as South Square in London. His practice now focuses on dispute resolution and insolvency.
Paul was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1998. Between 1997 and 2002, he was (initially) a consultant and (later) a Commissioner to the Law Commission. He was the Commissioner responsible for preparation of the Law Commission’s report, Improving the Arbitration Act 1996, which was issued in February 2003. Paul is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), a Fellow of the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand Inc and a chartered Arbitrator. Before going to the Bench, Paul was involved in many arbitrations, both as counsel and Arbitrator. Between 1998 and 2002, he was a member of the Council of AMINZ. Paul was re-elected to the AMINZ Council in 2018.
