EQC Mediation Profile
Maria has been involved in mediating complaints and disputes for 18 years, in Christchurch and other centres throughout the South Island. She has conducted over 300 mediations in the private sector, with large companies and small businesses alike, and in the public sector, with agencies involved in education, social policy, health and law enforcement. She has also mediated disputes with local bodies, in families, sporting organisations and community groups. Marias specialist areas have been discrimination and bullying issues in employment. She is experienced in disability issues, and was, for a time, a barrier free auditor, assessing buildings for wheelchair and other disability access. In Marias view, all disputes have one thing in common: people want to get their problem sorted out as soon as possible. Conflict is stressful, it is frustrating, and it can drag on for a long time. Mediation provides a safe and structured environment where all those involved can have their say, and feel listened to as well. All parties should come to mediation ready to state their case, but also be prepared to listen, consider another point of view and work towards achieving an outcome that is acceptable to everyone. Maria serves on the AMINZ Council and organises network meetings for members in Canterbury. These provide an opportunity for practitioners to keep up their professional development and talk about the work they are involved in.
