AMINZ Mediation Masterclass | Thursday 6 August
Built around a realistic mediation that unfolds throughout the day, this practical Masterclass combines discussion, role plays, coaching and reflection to explore the challenges of complex mediation.
Presented by internationally recognised mediation expert Professor Nadja Alexander, leading New Zealand academic and mediator Dr Grant Morris, and commercial mediator and AMINZ Fellow Ann Skelton, participants will discuss different approaches, practise techniques, receive coaching and feedback, and learn from each other’s experiences. Participants will leave with practical techniques, new ideas and greater confidence in managing complex mediations.

The day is built around a realistic case study that develops as new information emerges. Working with an experienced faculty, participants will:
Analyse a complex mediation as it unfolds
Consider different ways of designing and managing the mediation process
Participate in facilitated discussions, role plays and reflective exercises
Receive coaching and feedback from experienced mediators
Learn from the experience and perspectives of fellow mediators
Discuss how different approaches can influence the course of a mediation
Reflect on how the learning applies to their own mediation practice.

As the case study unfolds, the faculty will explore topics including:
Understanding conflict beyond the presenting issues
Communication under pressure
Designing an effective mediation process
Responding to new information and changing dynamics
Managing complexity, difficult conversations and impasse
Professional judgement, ethics and emerging developments in mediation practice.

By the end of the Masterclass, participants will have:
Practical techniques to apply in future mediations
Greater confidence in managing complex mediations
Practical ideas for communication and managing the mediation process
Ideas and feedback from the faculty and other experienced mediators
Practical ideas to use in their next mediation.

Who should attend?
This Masterclass is intended for experienced mediators who are looking to further develop their mediation practice and learn alongside other experienced practitioners. This is a workshop rather than a seminar, so participants should expect to actively contribute throughout the day.

Meet the Facilitators
Professor Nadja Alexander
Dr Nadja Alexander is recognised as a global thought leader in the field of mediation and dispute resolution (WWL). She has worked in dispute resolution settings in 40 countries and has pioneered systems for international mediation law and practice.
Nadja was a foundation member of the International Advisory Board of the United Nations Global Mediation Panel and is is a Lead Academic for the APEC Online Dispute Resolution Collaborative Framework. Her books include EU Mediation Law Handbook, International and Comparative Mediation, and the Singapore Convention on Mediation. She is lead author of the SIDRA Dispute Resolution Survey Report, published every two years.
Nadja is Professor of Law and Director of the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA) at the Singapore Management University.
Dr Grant Morris
Dr Grant Morris (PhD, LLB Hons, BA Hons) is Associate Professor of Law at Victoria University of Wellington. Grant is an accredited mediator and AMINZ Fellow and has worked as a facilitator and negotiator over the past two decades.
Dr Morris’s research areas include mediation, interest-based negotiation and New Zealand legal history. He has published several books and numerous articles on these subjects, including the recent work, Mediation in New Zealand (2nd ed, Thomson Reuters).
Ann Skelton
Ann is qualified commercial mediator, investigator and barrister with over 20 years experience. Ann has practised as a litigator, advocate and in-house Counsel in the areas of general civil litigation, insurance law and employment law.
Ann's investigation work has been into workplace issues such as allegations of bullying and harassment, but also wider reviews of workplace culture or more systemic issues.
Ann is a Fellow (Mediation) of AMINZ; member of the Adjudication Panel for Ministry of Education, the Natural Hazards Dispute Panel, and the Retirement Village Disputes Panel; a member of The Association of Workplace Investigators.
