AMINZ Expert Skills Intensive (AESI)

The AMINZ Expert Skills Intensive (AESI) is a two-day course designed to provide professionals who serve as expert witnesses with the knowledge and practical skills to give evidence effectively in court, tribunal, and dispute resolution settings. Participants will gain knowledge, confidence, practical tools, and guidance for preparing and delivering evidence in accordance with the rules of evidence and professional obligations. 

What to Expect

This intensive course covers ten modules, including: 

  • The development of expert evidence and the applicable High Court Rules. 

  • Conduct and reporting in domestic and international arbitration, and in mediation. 

  • The role of the expert, including appointment, interactions with advocates, and professional duties. 

  • Lessons from case law on expert evidence. 

  • How to write clear, concise, and effective reports. 

  • Practical guidance on cross-examination, including interactive exercises. 

  • Industry-recognised models, methods, and templates to support credible and confident evidence. 

What the Programme Covers

  • Her Honour Judge Andrea Manuel will highlight the essential role of expert evidence in supporting the Courts.  

  • Learn how expert evidence has developed in New Zealand, the key issues that shaped the law, and gain a working knowledge of the Evidence Act and High Court Rules. 

  • Examine how expert evidence is managed in domestic and international arbitration and understand the application of rules across different jurisdictions. 

  • Explore the process of expert appointment and the professional relationship between advocates and experts.

  • Understand the expectations and best practice for expert participation in mediation, focusing on professional duties, and effective collaboration.

  • Review key common law principles, leading judgments on expert performance, and the duties and responsibilities expected of experts.

  • Learn about recognised reporting models, methods, and useful templates.

  • Develop strong writing skills focused on conciseness, clarity, and communication, including real-world examples of effective and ineffective expert reporting.

  • Understand the practicalities, challenges, and expectations of giving oral evidence. Participants will take part in cross-examination exercises.
