The stories behind disputes with Dr Andrew Ladley
Disputes are rarely only about facts. They are also about stories. At personal, commercial and international levels, disputes often involve contested facts, rights, interests and identities. Beyond the issues themselves, conflicts are frequently shaped by the stories people tell about history, trust, belonging, decision-making, and who is seen as friend or foe.
These narratives, along with other factors, influence whether parties continue fighting, negotiate, mediate, leave issues unresolved, or find a path forward.
Join Dr Andrew Ladley in conversation with Deborah Manning as they explore a multidisciplinary framework for understanding disputes and conflict. Drawing on research and real-world examples, the discussion will examine the factors that shape conflict, influence decision-making, and open—or close—the possibilities for resolution.
The session will be interactive, with opportunities for questions and discussion, and will be particularly relevant to those interested in mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution across legal, commercial and public settings.

About the Speakers
Dr Andrew Ladley holds a PhD in Legal Anthropology from the London School of Economics. He has worked internationally as an adviser and mediator on conflict and governance, including with the United Nations and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva. He has held academic appointments at the National University of Singapore and Victoria University of Wellington, where he also served as Director of the Institute of Policy Studies.
Deborah Manning is a barrister, Senior Lecturer at AUT Law School, and Founder of The Good Practice Company. Her work brings together law, psychology and applied ethics to better understand professional judgement, conflict and decision-making. Deborah teaches dispute resolution and is particularly interested in the stories that shape conflict and the conversations that help people move forward.
